Meet Rebecca Townsend
When nothing makes sense, and everything feels like it’s falling apart…
I know what it’s like to wonder where to begin.
Like so many others, I grew up in a family full of contradictions. There was love—but also codependency, unspoken addictions, broken communication, and insecure attachment. There were moments of connection, but also deep confusion.
Living in that push-pull environment taught me to become a survivor. And not just any survivor—a high-functioning one. I developed skills that made me successful, effective, admired. But over time, some of those very same skills—perfectionism, over-responsibility, emotional numbing—became the things I had to unlearn.
I’m still on that journey. I believe that as a therapist, I can only guide you as far as I’ve been willing to go myself.
And I’ve gone far.
Over the years, my own growth has included individual therapy, couples therapy, 12-step recovery, silent retreats, guided retreats, and some exceptional professional mentors. I believe a good therapist has a good therapist—just like a dentist shouldn’t skip cleanings. My ongoing personal work helps clear the emotional “plaque” so I can be fully present for you.
What It's Like to Work with Me
I’m no longer offering weekly therapy sessions—but I still walk alongside individuals and couples in powerful, transformative ways through intensives and psychological evaluations.
My intensives are designed for people who want to go deep and go now. Whether it’s a relationship in crisis, an emotional stuck point you can’t move through, or a moment of personal reckoning—you don’t need six months of slow drip therapy. You need a focused, safe space to unpack what matters, reconnect with yourself or your partner, and leave with clarity, tools, and a renewed sense of direction.
My evaluations are just as relational. I don’t just run the numbers and hand you a report. I listen. I dig. I connect the dots. And I give you something that makes sense—emotionally and practically. Whether it’s for ADHD, autism, trauma history, learning challenges, or emotional overwhelm, I approach assessments with depth, insight, and a deep respect for the human being behind the data.
At my core, I still believe what I always have:
You don’t need fixing. You need space to understand your story—so you can start writing the next chapter with intention.
As Glinda the Good Witch said:
“You’ve always had the power, my dear. You just had to learn it for yourself.”
Who I Work With
I work with people who are ready for something deeper and more direct than traditional therapy. I offer:
🌀 Intensives
For couples and individuals facing emotional disconnection, relational breakdown, or longstanding patterns that no longer serve them. These 1–2 day sessions are immersive, intentional, and rooted in real, lasting transformation.
I specialize in:
- Couples or stepfamilies facing crisis or emotional drift
- Military and first responder couples navigating reintegration or trauma fallout
- High-functioning adults dealing with burnout, disconnection, or unresolved childhood pain
- Helpers, clinicians, and leaders ready to do their own deeper work
🧠 Psychological Evaluations
I provide comprehensive, relationally-attuned psychological assessments for both children and adults. These are not check-the-box evaluations—I take time to understand the whole picture.
I specialize in:
- ADHD, autism, and twice-exceptional profiles
- Learning differences (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia)
- Emotional and behavioral concerns
- Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs)
- Adult clarity evaluations for diagnosis, identity exploration, and accommodations
Whether you’re a parent searching for answers, or an adult looking to understand your own mind more fully, my assessments are thorough, thoughtful, and deeply respectful.
Credentials & Experience
I’ve been doing this work since before I had the credentials for it—because I’ve always been drawn to the work of holding space for people in pain. In college, I worked the crisis line at a local center and supported adults with cognitive disabilities in a group home setting. Those early roles taught me what no textbook could: how to sit with real people in real distress—and how to stay present when there’s no easy fix.
Today, I’m a Senior Licensed Psychological Examiner, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Nationally Certified Counselor, with a specialty in trauma recovery, psychological evaluation, and neurodiversity-informed care. I also hold an Ed.S. (Education Specialist) degree in School Psychology and am licensed as a school psychologist in the state of Tennessee.
Here’s the path I’ve walked:
- Early 1990s – Crisis counselor and direct support provider while earning my degree
- 1995 – Began career in juvenile residential treatment programs
- 1998 – Earned Tennessee license and developed psychological testing programs for youth in care
- 2000 – Transitioned to school psychology and opened a part-time private practice
- 2000–2011 – Served as a school psychologist, advocating for students with special needs and guiding families through the IEP/504 process
- 2011 – Returned to full-time private practice, specializing in trauma, relational repair, and military mental health
- 2014–present – Teach, consult, and offer intensives and evaluations for individuals, couples, families, and professionals seeking clarity, healing, and connection—especially those navigating complex relational, emotional, or neurodivergent experiences
Through every chapter, one mission has remained the same:
To help people reconnect—with themselves, with their loved ones, and with what matters most.
